As the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) returns to its traditional July meeting cycle, Codex Secretary Sarah Cahill outlined the organization’s roadmap for 2026 and beyond in an interview titled “The beating heart of Codex”. She highlighted key priorities: stabilizing global meeting schedules, leveraging digital transformation (including AI-assisted drafting and digital traceability), and supporting Members and Observers in developing robust international food standards. Cahill emphasized the need to balance cutting-edge technology with human consensus to protect consumers over the next five years, aiming for standards that are both scientifically sound and practically implementable for regulators and businesses worldwide.
At the conclusion of 2025, CAC Chairperson Allan Azegele (Kenya) reviewed the outcomes of the 48th Commission Session with the Codex Secretariat, sharing his observations on the future of Codex. Having chaired his first session, Azegele noted the honor and profound responsibility of guiding discussions that impact global food safety.
The FAO’s “Action to support implementation of Codex AMR Texts (ACT)” project contributed to the 6th edition of the international course “A One Health Challenge” on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), held November 10-14, 2025, in Veyrier-du-Lac, France. Co-organized by the Mérieux Foundation and Université de Paris, the course translates the Global Action Plan (GAP) on AMR’s five strategic objectives into practical, action-oriented approaches through an intensive residential training program.
The 55th session of the Codex Committee on Food Hygiene (CCFH55) concluded in Nashville, Tennessee, marking a key milestone. Delegates finalized work on the Guidelines for the Safe Use and Reuse of Water in Food Production and Processing, including annexes that provide a framework for assessing water “fit-for-purpose” — particularly critical for the fish and fishery sectors. Prior to the conclusion, the committee opened its Nashville meeting with a focus on connecting global delegates to advance food hygiene standards.
