On August 31, Liu Xing, PR chief of Doubao, issued a statement to debunk the widespread rumor that the AI chatbot had recommended boiling sun-warped slippers.
Recently, multiple bloggers across platforms claimed that after their slippers deformed under sun exposure, they asked Doubao for solutions—and the AI suggested boiling the slippers in hot water, leading to damage of both the slippers and the pot.
Liu Xing emphasized that Doubao would never provide such advice. A direct query to the chatbot about handling sun-deformed slippers confirms it explicitly warns against unproven methods like boiling or scalding with hot water.
Investigations revealed these videos were adapted from a joke video asking, "Who said sun-shrunk shoes can be boiled back to shape?" The original blogger behind the Doubao-related content admitted to deliberately guiding the AI to generate false advice, then staging the scene to create a humorous video for traffic. As the content gained traction, many other accounts followed with similar staged videos.
Since none of these videos were labeled as fictional or satirical, some media outlets and institutional accounts mistook them for factual news, turning the rumor into a widely spread false story.
