Alibaba’s Qwen AI ecosystem has been making waves with a series of strategic moves in 2026, from hardware launches to ecosystem integration and commercialization. Most recently, at the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) held on July 17, Qwen unveiled its first AI agent earphone. The ear-clamp designed device, which can be worn all day, integrates Qwen’s AI assistant capabilities, supporting features like simultaneous translation, meeting minutes recording, and health data tracking—marking another step in Alibaba’s push to build a cross-terminal AI experience following its earlier AI glasses launch.
Earlier this year, Alibaba unified its AI brand under "Qwen Large Model" (Qwen) in March 2026. The Qwen App, positioned as the consumer-facing flagship, saw its daily active users (DAU) surge to 73.52 million during the Spring Festival period, an impressive 940% increase year-over-year, highlighting strong user adoption.
E-commerce integration has been a key focus for Qwen. In May 2026, the Qwen App completed full integration with Taobao, enabling users to leverage AI for smart product selection, scenario-based bundle recommendations, and fake demand identification—helping to enhance shopping efficiency and rational decision-making. Additionally, Qwen rolled out an AI-powered ride-hailing feature in March, allowing users to place orders, set waypoints, and schedule rides using natural language commands, with seamless integration into Alipay’s AI payment system.
User growth metrics from QuestMobile’s Q1 2026 AI App Insights report show Qwen’s monthly active users (MAU) reached 170 million, ranking second among domestic AI native apps, trailing only Doubao’s 340 million. This reflects Qwen’s growing influence in the competitive AI app market.
Team dynamics have also been notable. Lin Junyang, former chief researcher of Qwen, left Alibaba to launch a new AI lab in May 2026, with plans to reach a valuation of $2 billion. Investors including GSR Ventures and Sequoia China are reportedly in talks to participate in the funding. In parallel, Alibaba established the ATH business group in March, led directly by CEO Wu Yongming, to integrate Qwen, MaaS, and other AI divisions, signaling a centralized push for AI development.
