Codex AI is set to reset user quotas at 6 AM on Tuesday, August 25, while rolling out a new version aimed at resolving recent high usage issues that have sparked user frustration across social media.
Users have been complaining about fast quota depletion in recent weeks—even after Codex’s technical manager Tibo distributed one reset card to all users, dissatisfaction remained. Many noted that temporary fixes like reset cards don’t tackle the root cause, and even those not using Sub2Api reverse proxy reported significant quota reductions.
Tibo identified several potential issues, though he emphasized these may not be the main causes: inefficiencies in long sessions after sending images, high P95+ usage of the computer history feature (despite most users not using it), and dialogue title generation exceeding expected resource consumption. Additionally, some users saw a drop in cache hit rates this week, which could lead to higher quota usage as lower cache efficiency means more direct data processing.
Ongoing investigations point to possible links to image compression in multi-round sessions (where images may be repeatedly sent) and tool calls invalidating old caches. The Codex team is still pinpointing exact causes but plans to release fixes for identified issues soon, with further efficiency improvements scheduled for next week.
As compensation, the quota reset will occur at 6 AM on August 25 (equivalent to 14:00 Pacific Standard Time on August 24). Users are advised to plan their usage if they have remaining quotas before the reset.
