Is OpenAI Codex Catching Up to Claude Code in AI Coding?
Recent data reveals a shift in AI coding dominance: Claude Code's growth slows to 5.2% while OpenAI Codex surges at 20.8%—nearly four times faster. As...
In the dynamic AI coding landscape, a notable shift is underway. For months, Anthropic’s Claude Code dominated the space, but new data from tracking platform TickerTrends indicates OpenAI’s Codex is rapidly closing the gap.
As of August 10, Claude Code’s four-week growth rate dropped to 5.2%, a sharp decline from its February-June 2026 heyday when it outperformed rivals. Its growth curve flattened in July, with TickerTrends reporting minimal annualized revenue increases—from $142.6 billion on July 6 to $151.2 billion on August 10, including a brief dip to $143.5 billion on July 27. The slowdown stems from market saturation: Claude Code has captured most early-adopting programmers, who are easier to convert and form strong usage habits.
Conversely, Codex is accelerating. OpenAI’s Tibo confirmed on X this week that Codex now has over 20 million active users. Internal OpenAI data (via CNBC) also noted its AI programming and work agent products reached ~20 million weekly active users. Codex’s user base extends beyond programmers—knowledge workers (analysts, marketers, designers) make up ~20% of users and grow three times faster than developers. OpenAI’s enterprise business, fueled by Codex, grew 50% this quarter, outpacing the company’s overall 35% growth.
TickerTrends estimates Codex’s annualized revenue grew 20.8% over four weeks—nearly four times Claude’s rate. While Claude still holds a larger share (1.7x Codex as of August 10, down from 2.4x in early July), the trend is clear: Codex is gaining ground.
Anthropic is adapting by expanding Claude Code beyond programmers with tools like Cowork (multi-step tasks using files/browsers) and Claude Tag (dubbed an "evolution of Claude Code" for product, customer service, and data teams). However, no new growth curve matching Claude’s early surge has emerged yet.
