ByteDance’s Doubao to Launch WorkBuddy-Rival Office AI Product Amid Commercialization Hurdles

ByteDance’s AI assistant Doubao is gearing up to launch a new office-focused AI product as early as next week, according to multiple reports. This standalone application, derived from Doubao’s existing "work task" mode, directly targets Tencent’s WorkBuddy—an office AI tool that has seen strong growth in enterprise user numbers recently. Industry insiders suggest this move may be a response to Tencent’s dominance in the office AI segment, potentially driving ByteDance to integrate resources from its Feishu collaboration platform with Doubao.
Doubao, however, is grappling with significant monetization challenges. A South China Morning Post report cited data from global AI market tracker Aicpb.com showing the app lost 6.1 million monthly active users (MAU) after rolling out its first paid subscription service. Analysts warn that ByteDance’s early push for commercialization could jeopardize its leading position in China’s competitive consumer AI market, as users express reluctance to pay for a service perceived as unreliable for serious tasks.
User feedback echoes this skepticism: some who paid for other ByteDance AI products like Xiaoyunque and Dreamina have avoided Doubao subscriptions, with one user noting they "dare not use Doubao for pure knowledge searches." Additionally, Doubao recently introduced a 12% commission on hotel bookings via its Douyin Merchant Platform link—11.4% for software services and 0.6% for payment processing. A Doubao PR representative stated the platform currently uses no paid promotion for its life services.
Meanwhile, Tencent is expanding its AI footprint: reports indicate it plans to add a right-swipe entry on the WeChat homepage for AI agents that integrate with all WeChat mini-programs. This underscores the fierce competition in China’s AI space, where both ByteDance and Tencent vie for dominance in consumer and enterprise segments. Alibaba’s Qianwen has also launched paid office assistant services, reflecting a broader trend toward AI tool monetization.
