Many users recently reacted with the thought: "Codex is gone." This impression isn’t surprising given the visible changes to OpenAI’s desktop products. On July 9, OpenAI began merging Codex into its new ChatGPT desktop application, actively flattening the once-distinct boundaries that made Codex feel like an independent product. While the first layer of changes involved icons, entry points, and product names, the more meaningful shift lies in OpenAI’s intent to erase the increasingly outdated line between "chat tools" and "execution tools."
Codex hasn’t vanished—it has evolved from a standalone developer tool into a deeper execution layer within the ChatGPT ecosystem. For OpenAI, this integration matters far more than maintaining separate narratives for two products.
In its July 9 post titled "ChatGPT is now a partner for your most ambitious work," OpenAI explicitly stated that the Codex app was merging with the new ChatGPT desktop app. The post emphasized Codex remains a powerful coding agent for developers and technical professionals, now accessible via the unified desktop entry.
The merge also introduced ChatGPT Work, which connects to tools like Slack, Gmail, Google Drive, calendars, and CRMs to pull context and generate documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and websites. The Verge’s July 10 report framed this integration as combining ChatGPT and Codex, enabling non-technical users to leverage Codex-like execution capabilities for non-programming tasks.
OpenAI listed enhanced Codex features post-merge, including inline diff editing, sidebar PR reviews, faster computer use, and multi-repository support. GPT-5.6 now covers ChatGPT, Codex, and APIs, with ChatGPT Work and Codex sharing Sol, Terra, and Luna model tiers across different plans—positioning Codex as an execution engine within the GPT system.
Previously, ChatGPT was seen as conversational (focused on Q&A and idea organization) and Codex as execution-focused (coding and task running). However, real-world tasks blend these steps—understanding, researching, tooling, and outputting results. OpenAI’s integration aligns with this reality, unifying "chatting" and "doing" into a single product chain.
The goal is a unified desktop workspace where users don’t choose between ChatGPT or Codex but select modes (chat, work, execution) within one entry. The fading of Codex’s standalone identity is less important than OpenAI’s push to blur AI tool boundaries: chat, work, coding, browsing, plugins, and continuous tasks will increasingly become different modes within one system.
