Recently, Doubao, the AI assistant, rolled out a significant update to its "Work Task" mode, introducing the new "Doubao Virtual Desktop" feature that enables users to control their Windows computers through the AI, according to a report by Shanghai Securities News (reporter Luo Maolin).
The Doubao Virtual Desktop is built on universal GUI (Graphical User Interface) capabilities, allowing the AI model to understand and interact with on-screen elements without relying on MCP, API, plugins, or CLI tools. This non-intrusive design ensures the AI can perform tasks like operating applications, browsing web pages, and handling cross-software workflows without seizing the user’s mouse or keyboard, or disrupting their ongoing work.
For users, the process is straightforward: in the Doubao desktop app, select the Work Task mode and local computer, then choose the "Operate Computer" skill from the skill bar and input task instructions. The virtual desktop will then mimic human-like interactions—viewing the screen, moving the mouse, and typing—to advance complex tasks. Users can real-time monitor the AI’s operations, pause the task, or take over control at any time.
To access this feature, users need to download the latest Windows version of Doubao from its official website. They then complete authorization and initialization steps in the Work Task mode as guided by the system. Alternatively, users can initiate the task via the "Operate Computer" skill and follow Doubao’s prompts to update the app.
