Doubao’s Mid-July 2026 Updates: AI Agent Shutdown, Navigation Testing, and Commercialization Push
Doubao rolled out a flurry of changes in mid-July 2026, including the controversial AI Agent shutdown, navigation capability testing, HarmonyOS input...
From July 13 to 14, 2026, ByteDance’s AI assistant Doubao unveiled a series of impactful updates covering feature adjustments, ecosystem expansions, and commercialization moves, highlighting its adaptability to regulatory shifts and industry demands.
The most contentious news was the upcoming shutdown of Doubao’s AI Agent feature. Announced on July 4, the feature will go offline on July 15, with user data retained until October 15 before being processed under privacy policies. This decision aligns with the "Interim Measures for the Management of AI Anthropomorphic Interaction Services" and sparked backlash from users who relied on the feature for emotional interactions, becoming a notable case of user feedback post-regulatory enforcement.
On the functional side, Doubao is testing navigation capabilities. ByteDance has deployed up to 30 employees since mid-June to refine this feature, focusing on user experience optimization, map SDK improvements, and real-time public transport query development—leveraging Baidu’s map data and underlying technology.
Ecosystem compatibility expanded with the HarmonyOS input method beta for Huawei phones running HarmonyOS 5.0+, supporting voice recognition, keyboard input, and word association with 9-key and 26-key layouts. Additionally, Huawei’s FreeClip 2 series earphones now fully integrate with Doubao: HarmonyOS users can wake both Xiao Yi and Doubao simultaneously, while iOS/Android users get message broadcasting and face-to-face translation via the earphones’ NPU AI processor.
Commercialization efforts gained momentum as Doubao was added to Douyin’s e-commerce settlement sequence, establishing a "category + channel" cost model—seen by insiders as a reference for AI large model commercialization. Doubao also launched a paid model, joining Tongyi Qianwen and Kimi in moving away from free services amid the 2025 Chinese AI large model industry’s 180 billion yuan loss, marking the sector’s shift toward monetization.
