First, Alibaba's Qwen made waves with its open-source Qwen3.8-27B model. Released on August 17, the model (30 billion parameters, multi-modal, Apache 2.0 license) hit 1 million downloads in just two days and topped Hugging Face's global model trend list. The community responded rapidly, producing over 500 quantized versions in 48 hours, with total downloads of related models exceeding 5 million. Hugging Face's "Open Source Model Status: Summer 2026 Observation" report recognized Qwen as a leading global open-source foundation model. Its 30B parameter size strikes a balance between performance and accessibility—affordable and runnable for ordinary users, earning it the nickname "local Opus 4.6" among overseas developers.

In AI security, Chinese teams dominated the CyberGym benchmark (launched by UC Berkeley, covering 1507 real vulnerabilities from 188 open-source projects). Sangfor AI ranked first with a 93.1% success rate, while Fudan University's Whitzard (developed by Professor Yang Min's team) took second place globally and first among universities with 91.2%. Alibaba's Qwen followed with the Qwen-UI-Agent on August 20, a GUI agent base model covering mobile, PC, web, and deep search. It achieved impressive scores: 97.5% on AndroidDaily (near perfect), 92.2% on MobileWorld-Real, and 79.5% on OSWorld-Verified. Trained on over 100 real devices and 150 apps, it includes safety features—pausing sensitive actions like payments or data deletion to hand control back to users.

Alibaba's 2027 fiscal Q1 earnings report (ending June 30, 2026) revealed AI's dual impact: AI cloud and computing services revenue reached 48.437 billion yuan (up 45% year-over-year), while AI-related product revenue grew triple-digit for the 12th consecutive quarter (12.376 billion yuan, ARR over 49.5 billion yuan). However, the group's net profit dropped 75% to 10.444 billion yuan, with the "AI Lab and Applications" division losing 13.861 billion yuan—reflecting heavy investments in its 380 billion yuan AI infrastructure plan (190 billion yuan spent so far).
